Three interesting articles:
I first came to China in 1983. At that time there were only one million fixed-line phones for one billion people - and of course no mobile network. Most international communication was by telex (a precursor of fax and email), powered by a fleet of bicycle couriers at the Chinese end. Twenty-three years on, I am back in China again - and what a difference!
During the past few weeks I have travelled across China and seen evidence of the decline of the old state-run industries as well as the rapid growth of the new Western-style companies with their science and industrial parks.
Today parts of China look like the UK of my early childhood. Only the best of the best get to university - the competition is fierce. It is also expensive to attend and the emphasis is on the subjects needed to support the rapidly growing industries. China is graduating around 350,000 engineers and technologists every year, which is well over twice the total number of the US and UK combined.
